Expandable Licensing for Surveillance Devices

Enhance Your Surveillance Capabilities with Additional Licenses

The Synology Surveillance Device License Pack is designed for businesses and individuals looking to expand their surveillance capabilities on Synology Surveillance Station. It's suitable for adding more cameras, I/O modules, intercoms, access controllers, IP speakers, and transaction devices.

Licensing Plan

  • Default Licenses: Synology NAS/NVR comes with default licenses which vary by model. These licenses enable the management of surveillance devices.
  • Purchasable License Packs: Offers options for 1, 4, or 8 Surveillance Device License Packs. Each pack contains a single license key to activate the corresponding number of surveillance devices.

License Units

  • General Rule: Typically, each IP camera, I/O module, IP speaker, intercom, and access controller requires one license. Transaction devices generally need two licenses.
  • Multi-Lens Cameras and Video Servers: May require additional licenses. For example, a multi-lens camera like Axis Q3709-PVE with three lenses needs three licenses for displaying all channels.

License Activation and Management

  • Process: Licenses can be added in Surveillance Station under Main Menu > License > Add. An installation wizard will guide through the process.
  • Internet Connection: Activation or deactivation of licenses requires internet access to connect to Synology’s Authorization Server. Offline activation can be done using DS cam.
  • Migration: Purchased licenses can be migrated to a different Synology product, but default licenses cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Where to Buy: Licenses can be purchased from authorized resellers. Keeping the license keys and proof of purchase safe is essential.
  2. Renewal: Surveillance device licenses are valid indefinitely once activated and do not require renewal.
  3. Migration: Licenses can be migrated to a new Synology device in the event of hardware replacement, following specific procedures.
  4. Offline Installation/Deletion: If the NAS/NVR is offline, licenses can be installed or deleted using Surveillance Station Client or DS cam app.
  5. Viewing Installed Licenses: Installed licenses can be viewed in the License app within Surveillance Station.

Notes:

  • Virtual DSM does not include default device licenses.
  • Users are responsible for the safekeeping of purchased license keys.
  • Proof of purchase, like an invoice or receipt, should be retained for potential future reference.
  • License authorization requires a registered Synology Account.

This flexible licensing system ensures that as your surveillance needs grow, your Synology Surveillance Station can scale accordingly, providing an efficient and customizable surveillance solution.

    Cost-Effective Add-On for my brand New DS224+

That's why so many just buy the 1-Cam or 4-Cam packaged CCTV solutions at the local shop but they still have to hump around the house to install each camera with individual cable-runs, and learn how their system needs to be configured, etc. These systems are great for consumers who don't know anything about IP-based CCTV systems but if you're reading this review, I'm assuming you're already tech-savvy.

These systems are great for consumers who don't know anything about IP-based CCTV systems but if you're reading this review, I'm assuming you're already tech-savvy. Now have 12 CCTV IP Cameras all over my house connected and managed by my new DS224+ NAS. That is why I buy 1-Cam and 8-Cam, smooth installation overall. Got a buddy deal and cheapest I can find around online. Overall Cost-Effective and happy with the customer service. Speedy

    Another 2 cameras

What else can I say? It allowed me to add a third & fourth camera to my setup.

    It works

If you have a synology NAS, you may have discovered that you can use it to run IP cameras on your network. The only thing you need is your cameras, a PoE switch (or injectors), and the NAS. In my case, I use the NAS as a backup but I don't even come close to fully utilizing it so it is doubling as a station for my cameras.

Here's the issue with Synology. The units work on a licensing system for cameras. Most come with 2. If you only have 2 cameras, no big deal. You have everything you need right out of the box. If you want more, however, you have to buy licenses. This practice is really annoying. I did it because it's still cheaper than buying a dedicated unit (and adding NAS friendly hard drives, remember, they need to be surveillance or NAS rated, not standard hard drives and definitely not SSDs because of the constant read/write access).

Realistically, I labelled this 5 stars because it is exactly what it is supposed to be. You get the code, you enter it, and a half a second later, you have the ability to add a new camera. I just have a problem with Synology's practice of charging so much per camera.

Worked to expand DS1019+ from two to three cameras

Expanded my DS1019+ to three licenses (on top of the two built in) in order to use all three of the cameras in my house. Some people complain about needing a physical card instead of just an online code, but in the end this is more secure and I was able to put the card in a folder so I don't lose track if I needed it later. Emails and files are too easy to lose, which is slightly ironic considering this is going on a NAS.

Docked one star for the price. I feel like the mid-range 1019+ should have either had more licenses included than an entry level model, or the price of the licenses should be about half of what they are. Eventually I plan to add one or two more cameras and will have to weigh the cost of the licenses in deciding to proceed.
