Synology DSM 5.0: Disk Station Manager gets a make-over
Monday, 20 January 2014 00:00

Cloud Station

Synology's Cloud Station is an alternative for the likes of SkyDrive and Dropbox. A new feature of Cloud Station in DSM 5.0 is that it not only allows you to use a pc or mobile device as a client, but if you want you can also use another Synology NAS device.

Cloud Station offers various possibilities. A client can have read only access, but you can also share a link and view older versions of a file from a client.

You can synchronise the files on your Diskstation with Google Drive, Dropbox and Baidu.

Photo Station / Video Station

Photo Station has also been improved. You can organise your photos more easily, and you can publish them on YouTube.

In Video Station, you can select your own images on the video posters. It also supports 5.1 sound on an Apple TV.

Synology supports Google Chromecast as well. You can stream the content from the DS Video and DS Audio-apps on your smartphone of tablet to your Chromecast.

Synology also has an app for Samsung Smart TVs.

Mobile apps

Synology didn't just improve DSM, but also its mobile apps, which includes one for Windows Phone in the near future. DS Photo lets you stream directly to an Apple TV, and you can easily create a Smart Album based on key words.

You can synchronise the Cloud Station app with more than one Cloud Station.

DS Audio can transcode audio on the fly, for example from uncompressed to high (320kb/s), medium (192 kb/s) or low (128 kb/s). If you have a Synology NAS device based on an x86 processor, you can also use the smart settings, which means that the bandwidth available determines the quality.

DS Download will also be available for Windows Phone.

Management

Many companies have more than one Synology NAS device. Smart Hub (monitoring), Smart Management (remote management) and Smart Governance (rights management) make managing them easier. The images below are pretty clear as to what the possibilities are. Smart Governance also makes it easy to copy configurations to a new NAS device, thereby speeding up its deployment in the company network.

Scale-out Cluster

Scale-out Cluster is another addition to DSM 5.0. This enables you to use the storage and the performance of one diskstation from another one. During the demonstration in Amsterdam, Synology showed us a video in which Synology employees used Scale-out Cluster to create a volume of 1 petabyte (1000 TB) at an event in Taiwan in just 11 minutes.

Snapshots

DSM 5.0's support for snapshots has improved. You can access older versions of you files very easily using snapshots. It is also possible to provide iSCS LUNs with snapshots, which can be triggered by both Microsoft HyperV (from 2008 R2) and a VMWare vSphere DataStore.

SSD Caching / Memory Compression

You can use an SSD as read and write cache in DSM 5.0, which should improve performance substantially. DSM 5.0 further offers the possibility of memory compression. If a program isn't active, the memory it uses is compressed, which means that the active programs have more memory to use.
